Pr0n opens tomorrow here is the show statement:

This show is quite a bit different than ones I have done in the past. For one thing it is about a highly controversial subject for many people. Secondly, it is about appropriation. Each of these images are based on the work of other people, they are filled with thousands of tiny images gotten from surfing the net. I have tried to stay away from any images that are copyrighted but with the sheer numbers (over 5000) I am sure there are a few. I have distorted them, changing them beyond recognition. (If you do see yourself though let me know) The idea started out simple enough — a man lying on a bed filled with longing, became the initial image to be filled with a photo mosaic of thousands of “porn” images. From there I continued to do more and more pictures — making them almost abstract. I was more interested in the shapes and composition that the “person or people” (with porn are we really ever interested in the “person”? Maybe a hot face or body or the sexual act, pornography is a kind of appropriation in itself). This is where it got interesting to me and I started to paint over the images - really abstracting them.
Then the idea came to mount them on canvas and start a painting and let the viewers add to it. Again more appropriation, so in a sense you the viewer help me finish the work. Please feel free to add what you wish on the canvas, with the understanding that it becomes my property.

Pinhole Photography Lecture

The Mimbres Region Arts Council (MRAC), in conjunction with the Expressive Arts Department at WNMU, will present guest lecturers and artists Nancy Spencer and Eric Renner, on Thursday, Feb 16, at 6:30 p.m. at the Besse Forward Auditorium Global Resource Center on the WNMU campus.

The lecture is part of the Artist Lecture Series and is free and open to the public.

Eric Renner and Nancy Spencer are co-editors of the Pinhole Journal and Spencer is director of the Pinhole Resource. Renner is the author of “Pinhole Photography: Rediscovering an Historic Technique (Focal Press).”

They have both received NEA grants and their images are represented in major collections throughout the world including MOMA, IMP-GEH, the National Gallery of Canada and Bibliotheque Nationale. Renner and Spencer teach workshops internationally and reside in New Mexico.

The Mimbres Region Arts Council is a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the cultural life of southwestern New Mexico by providing quality programs that nurture and inspire a love and understanding of the arts. In 2005, MRAC was chosen as the top-rated arts council for the third year in a row.

Second Thoughts

Well, Pr0n is hung (so to speak) but I am having serious second thoughts about it now. It looks good and there is has been good feedback but I’m not quite sure what is saying. There are 3 small flash movies that I think I am happiest with. Thanks to jtarbell at www.levitated.net I took a pornographic keyword list from the US Congress and put it in a text “space” In one it fills up the screen with no user input, in another you click on the words and they get bigger and seem to float by. A lot of the words by themselves are not pornographic so it is kind of fun. The fractal will put words together making some new vocabulary, it will be fun to work on these, adding and subtracting words. I also have one of a chatroom conversation. The chatroom needs somemore work. I would like pictures to float up instead of the buttons. I still could use some Flash instruction but this was a nice way of getting this up and running. Flash reading xml files is getting easier for me although a couple of these have the words loaded in Action Script. Here are the links:

Tulum

The beach and Carribean
We just got back from 9 days in Tulum Mexico at an “Eco Resort” It was grand and a nice time away for me, did a lot of sketching. We saw the Mayan ruins and floated down ancient waterways in Sian Kaan. Besides some excellent Tequila the food was out of this world, very Italian because it seems a lot of them have settled there. The place we stayed at only had 10 rooms and was right on the beach

Pr0n - the Show

I’m clearing out the studo for the show. I’ve strung enough wire to make 4 “hallways” out of black plastic sheeting, 4 foot widw and 10 feet long. You can mill around outside looking at the prints or go down the hallway and view a painting/collage. You are asked to leave some graffiti or “appropriate” humor on the painting. So the entire show ends up being about appropriation. I am working on a flash movie of 10 minutes of porn room cha(I think it turns out the handles are more fun that the actual chat, Health Ledger seems to be very popular as a name right now). Still working out some bugs but hope to have it up for the show — projected on a wall. Show opens for the Chocolate Fantasia this Saturday but may finished.
