Morphing Van Gogh Portraits

This creative video is by Philip Scott Johnson. I saw an earlier one on Women in art, but it is nice to see all one artist’s changing views of himself.

Art Experiment with Luc Tuymans

I like to work of painter Luc Tuymans, who “makes extensive use of techniques from photography, television and film, such as cropping, framing, sequencing and (sometimes extreme) close-ups. His palette usually tends toward monochrome. Subjects of his paintings range from the historic, for example covering the Holocaust or colonial politics in Belgian Congo, to the very banal, depicting everyday objects. Some of his paintings represent abstract emotions.” – Wikipedia

This is an interesting experiment, but I think says more about how we filter out images during our day. I don’t think it says much, if anything about art appreciation or recognition. Everyday we are bombarded with more images and information than my grandfather’s generation could imagine. We have learned “not to see”

Pr0n Opens

Pr0n opens tomorrow here is the show statement:

Red Unico
This show is quite a bit different than ones I have done in the past. For one thing it is about a highly controversial subject for many people. Secondly, it is about appropriation. Each of these images are based on the work of other people, they are filled with thousands of tiny images gotten from surfing the net. I have tried to stay away from any images that are copyrighted but with the sheer numbers (over 5000) I am sure there are a few. I have distorted them, changing them beyond recognition. (If you do see yourself though let me know) The idea started out simple enough — a man lying on a bed filled with longing, became the initial image to be filled with a photo mosaic of thousands of “porn” images. From there I continued to do more and more pictures — making them almost abstract. I was more interested in the shapes and composition that the “person or people” (with porn are we really ever interested in the “person”? Maybe a hot face or body or the sexual act, pornography is a kind of appropriation in itself). This is where it got interesting to me and I started to paint over the images - really abstracting them.
Then the idea came to mount them on canvas and start a painting and let the viewers add to it. Again more appropriation, so in a sense you the viewer help me finish the work. Please feel free to add what you wish on the canvas, with the understanding that it becomes my property.

Second Thoughts

Well, Pr0n is hung (so to speak) but I am having serious second thoughts about it now. It looks good and there is has been good feedback but I’m not quite sure what is saying. There are 3 small flash movies that I think I am happiest with. Thanks to jtarbell at www.levitated.net I took a pornographic keyword list from the US Congress and put it in a text “space” In one it fills up the screen with no user input, in another you click on the words and they get bigger and seem to float by. A lot of the words by themselves are not pornographic so it is kind of fun. The fractal will put words together making some new vocabulary, it will be fun to work on these, adding and subtracting words. I also have one of a chatroom conversation. The chatroom needs somemore work. I would like pictures to float up instead of the buttons. I still could use some Flash instruction but this was a nice way of getting this up and running. Flash reading xml files is getting easier for me although a couple of these have the words loaded in Action Script. Here are the links:

Pr0n - the Show

Pr0n show ad
I’m clearing out the studo for the show. I’ve strung enough wire to make 4 “hallways” out of black plastic sheeting, 4 foot widw and 10 feet long. You can mill around outside looking at the prints or go down the hallway and view a painting/collage. You are asked to leave some graffiti or “appropriate” humor on the painting. So the entire show ends up being about appropriation. I am working on a flash movie of 10 minutes of porn room cha(I think it turns out the handles are more fun that the actual chat, Health Ledger seems to be very popular as a name right now). Still working out some bugs but hope to have it up for the show — projected on a wall. Show opens for the Chocolate Fantasia this Saturday but may finished. I’m opening really the morning after the $1.98, 2/19/06, stop by for a mimosa anytime after 11:00 am. See Gaysilver for more info on that.

Pr0n - the process

Here is a detail of how these images are created. First I use GIMP to highlight edges and posterize the image. I take out recognizable features and adjust for levels, color etc. Sometimes backgrounds are changed as well. So the original is pretty much lost. I then save as a ping. I ususally save the images 1200 pixels at the largest. I then start Metapixel and upsize it 4 or 5 times depending on the look I want. Of course there are many other adjustments to Metapixel to get the image. Here is a detail of the image I am going to use in the ad.
detail of photo mosaic

The image is then printed — in this case on 22 x 30″ Magnani Pescia paper on an HP Designjet printer. I then use Golden Acrylics to paint over the image, using transparent paints I manipulate the image until I get it where I want it.

Pr0n

A new series for February, about porn. Wikipedia for Pr0n is:

Pr0n or pron is 1337 slang for pornography

This deliberately inaccurate spelling/pronunciation for “porn” is sometimes used in legitimate communications (such as email discussion groups, Usenet, chat rooms, and internet web pages) to circumvent language and content filters - which might result in messages being rejected as offensive or flagged as spam - and to prevent search enginesfrom associating them with pornography - which might result in unwelcome traffic. It has subsequently become one of the most widely used examples of 1337 speak (leet speak). Pr0n is also sometimes spelled backwards to further obscure the meaning to potential non-informed readers.

It can also refer to ASCII art depicting pornographic images.

Pr0n show ad

No ASCII art but photo collage using GIMP and Metapixel. Using found images and changing them in GIMP then putting them through Meatpixel.
